Some of these statistics make more sense when put into perspective. The current world population is approximately 6,897,100,000 according to the United States Census Bureau. This means if there are 1.97 billion Internet users and the world population is 6.9 billion, 29 percent of the world population is using the Internet.
In 1992 the Internet became generally available to the public. For a few years prior to this the Internet was used by Universities and government bodies. By 1997 the number of worldwide users was estimated to be 10′s of millions. Typically these users accessed the Internet through their corporate high-speed networks or through telephone dial-up accounts. December of 1990 was the introduction of the worlds first "www" or world-wide web where pages were a combination of text and graphics. Prior to this pages consisted of lists of names that were links to other lists of names or files that could be downloaded.
It was in 1999 digital subscriber lines or DSL was introduced to the world. With DSL the general public had access to high-speed Internet for affordable prices. These connections could also be shared using a new class of low cost business and home routers.
It is amazing to look back over the last 19 years. From the first public availability of the Internet to affordable high-speed Internet to almost 30 percent of the world’s population using the Internet. It’s been a great ride and I have a feeling it is just getting started!
