How do you get started writing your own eBook?

Pick Your Topic

You are an expert on at least one topic. Start there. What do people ask you when they say "Can I pick your brain for a minute?" or "Can you give me a hand with this?" In picking your topic, after considering these questions, read your blogs … all of them. Do you find a theme or consistent topic you talk about? How about a collection of different topics that would benefit a person trying to perform certain tasks?

Perhaps you are an auto mechanic and have written blogs on how to change your oil, what types of oil to use, how to change a head lamp, what types of head lamps to choose for you car, etc. You can gather all of these topics into an eBook and call it "Handy Tips for the Aspiring Do-It-Yourself Mechanics" or "10 Great Tips to Save Money While Keeping Your Car In Top Notch Shape."

Outline Your eBook

Using the Blog topics as your key topics for your eBook, organize them into the most general topics first and the most specific topics last. You will want to add an introduction and conclusion in your outline. You may feel your eBook is incomplete without a new topic or chapter. Include this in your outline and then blog about this topic in your blog next week!

Write Your Book

You have your topic and outline. Now it is time to write your eBook. If you based your eBook on a series of blogs you have written, plug your blog content into the eBook following your eBook outline.

At this point you have two choices. You can:

• Finish it yourself

• Have someone else finish it for you

If you choose to finish it yourself you will want to start from chapter one (not the introduction) and read through the entire eBook filling in gaps, eliminating unnecessary redundancies, and creating smooth transitions from one chapter to the next. Then write your short conclusion. Now, go back and write your Introduction. Include what inspired you to write your eBook and who will benefit from reading it. Now, send your eBook to a proof-reader!

If you choose to have someone else finish your eBook they will follow the same process as you would if you did it yourself. When they are finished you will want to carefully proof read the book. You are looking for grammatical and typography errors they have made as well as ensuring the content is still accurate. Your name and reputation is on this book even if someone else contributed so make sure you are happy with it when it is complete.

One final note. Remember, this is an eBook. It can be dynamic, full of graphics including audio and video! If you have also created Podcasts and Videos of your blogs, include them in your eBook.

Congratulations! You now have an eBook.
